Why Visit Ocho Rios?
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Ocho Rios does not as its name suggests have eight rivers. But, Ocho Rios is the garden of Jamaica and the place where Jamaicans say, heaven spills into the seas. Christopher Columbus described the area as, "the fairest land mine eyes have ever seen" and the region has impressed visitors ever since. Grassy mountains roll gently to the turquoise blue sea while white sand coves play hide and seek along the craggy coastline. The town is a hub of activity with an intensity that makes it seem in constant motion. The thrill of bargaining for handmade items at the Crafts Market is a treat in itself. Inbond shops carry a bounty of brand name goods. Gourmands will delight in the culinary joys to be discovered at Ocho Riosı elegant restaurants and local cafes. Nightclubs live happily beside taverns and lounges. Then, after the wear and tear of manmade pleasures, the easy life is only a step away.
Ocho Rios is a place of waterfalls and exotic gardens. The world famous Dunns River Falls is an exhilarating climb through warm cascading waters. The tropical splendor of Coyaba and Shaw Park Gardens are vistas of flora magnificence. Take a drive through a forest of ferns aptly called Fern Gully. Ride a horse on the trails at Prospect Plantation. Play polo at nearby Chukka Cove or relax and sun at James Bond Beach. |

OCHO RIOS DOWNTOWN Good location for shopping as the cruise ships are parked next door. Try going on days with less or no ships and ask for a discount as you are staying at a hotel, not a cruise ship passenger. Sunset Jamaica Grande and a few apartment hotels are located here and the hills above. Silver Seas is located further uptown from Jamaica Grande, but right also right on the sea. TOWER ISLE / BOSCOBEL / ORCABESSA East of Ocho Rios are the smaller towns of Tower Isle, Boscobel and eventually Orcabessa along the Coast. Tower Isle is home to Couples and some apartment/villa accommodations. Boscobel is home to another Beaches Resort and Orcabessa is home to Chris Blackwell of Island records fame and also James Bond Beach and Firefly. RUNAWAY BAY Runaway Bay has the feeling of a smaller town in Jamaica with a culture because of the Cardiff Hall Villas. There are four or five small restaurants that offer a cheap fish dinner, a grocery and pretty much everything you need. The town has some large all inclusives like Breezes and Hedonism 3 but also offers a few small all-inclusives and Runaway HEART one of the best local hotels with access to the Cardiff Hall Beach.
DUNNS RIVER FALLS AREA A few large all-inclusives are springing up between Dunns River Falls and St. Anns Bay. Sandals Dunns River is now located next to the new Riu Ocho Rios and other Spanish hotel companies are building just west of that in the near future. |
