First trip to Jamaica and you want a taste of everything
Ocho Rios is the garden of Jamaica and the place where Jamaicans say, heaven spills into the seas. In
spite of the name, Ocho Rios does not have eight rivers but it does have Dunn’s River Falls.
Christopher Columbus described the area as, "the fairest land mine eyes have ever seen" and the
region has impressed visitors ever since. Grassy mountains roll gently to the turquoise blue sea while
white sand coves play hide and seek along the craggy coastline. The town is a hub of activity with an
intensity that makes it seem in constant motion. The thrill of bargaining for handmade items at the
Crafts Market is a treat in itself. Inbond shops carry a bounty of brand name goods. Gourmands will
delight in the culinary joys to be discovered at Ocho Rios¹ elegant restaurants and local cafes.
Nightclubs live happily beside taverns and lounges. Then, after the wear and tear of manmade
pleasures, the easy life is only a step away.
Ocho Rios is a place of waterfalls and exotic gardens. The world famous Dunns River Falls is an
exhilarating climb through warm cascading waters. The tropical splendor of Coyaba and Shaw Park
Gardens are vistas of flora magnificence. Take a drive through a forest of ferns aptly called Fern
Gully. Ride a horse on the trails at Prospect Plantation. Play polo at nearby Chukka Cove or relax
and sun at James Bond Beach.
Drive west of Ocho Rios to Discovery Bay where Columbus first landed, or to Runaway Bay, so
called because slaves once used this area as an escape route. Visit Seville Great House to see Indian
and Spanish artifacts. Or, climb the hills to Nine Miles, the birth and resting place of the legendary
reggae musician Bob Marley. Just east of Ocho Rios in the village of Oracabessa is the celebrated
Firefly property, the Jamaican retreat of playwright Noel Coward. So, in Ocho Rios there is always a
mix of excitement and serenity. The place where heaven spills into the sea is truly one of the world¹s
most ravishing resorts.
